The Norton grape was first cultivated by a Dr. D.N. Norton of Richmond Virginia in 1820. Dr. Norton produced wines from this grape through the late 1800s. Today is is grown primarily in Missouri.

The Norton grape is very adaptable to local growing conditions and is very hearty and immune to most diseases. It is prized for the high-quality dry table wine it can produce. It is similar to the the concord grape, but not as sweet.
